In keeping with the family name, Cristina Torre (daughter of Joe Torre) has made a name for herself through her catching skills. This time, however, Torre was making history by catching a one year old baby before it could fall to its death on Third Avenue yesterday.
Cristina Torre was cycling to work yesterday morning when she spotted a one year old boy dangling from the awning of frozen yogurt shop between 91st and 92nd streets. Thinking quickly, Torre threw her bike to the side and ran under the awning to await the child’s fall. She positioned herself so that there was no way the baby could fall past her and succeeded in catching the child a few minutes later when it fell from the awning.
In a statement issued to a Brooklyn newspaper by police, authorities said that it is not yet clear what the parents were doing at the time of the incident. Police were notified and the baby was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with a bloody nose and the police arrested the parents on charges of reckless endangerment. Three other children were taken out of the couple’s custody.
