Brooklyn Mikvah Finally Opens In Park Slope Observant Jews in Park Slope will revel in this piece of important local Brooklyn news. They finally have a mikvah to call their own! After more than 5 years of construction, the first ever Park Slope mikvah has opened its doors. The William and Betty Katz Center For Jewish Life is located on 15th street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. The center is three stories, with floors separated by gender. While the construction of the center was slightly controversial with neighbors, the result is something that Rabbi Shimon Hecht calls “a dream come true.”

Literally, a mikvah translates as a “pool” and is Jewish ritual bathhouse and is an absolutely integral part of the religion. The rabbi explains, “it’s a major component of the Jewish community, one that Jewish law requires for married women.” The center is spa-like in its appearance and is designed to give observant Jews a safe and private place to engage in the ritual process of purification and cleansing. The baths on the first floor will be designated for men, while those on the lower level are for women. Appointments are necessary for use.

While local Brooklyn residents worry about parking related concerns, most are thrilled and Brooklyn newspapers are gladly calling this a victory.
