Brooklyn NY’s Atlantic Yards project is bringing the previously child oriented concept of lego building to real life with its modular tower.

On Tuesday, officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking for their planned 32-story, 363-apartment tower that will be going up next to Barclays Center. The interesting thing about this powerhouse of an apartment complex is that it will be manufactured piece by piece two miles away (at a Brooklyn Navy Yard factory) and transported to the site. When stacked together, like legos, this will become the world’s largest prefabricated “modular” building.

The project expects to include 181 apartments designated solely for families of low to moderate incomes, with the other 182 available apartments being sold at market rate. The building was designed by SHoP Architects, the same company that designed the Barclays Center and is part of a $5 billion Atlantic Yards project.

This lego tower will rise at the corner of Dean Street and Flatbush Avenue. Expected to be completed by the summer of 2014, it will literally be located a mere eight feet away from the Dean Street side of the Barclays Center!

Mayor Bloomberg has high hopes for the building, and for the future it will bring with it. He stated: “The modular construction that will be used for … Atlantic Yards really has the potential to change the way cities are built.”

We shall see. Per usual, Brooklyn leads the way.
